Marty and me going through the book

I like this pic for a few reasons. Marty and I are going through my Petersons guide to edible wild plants. The reason I think this is important is because there are over 365,000 plant species in this country and 2/3 of them are edible and because plants change appearance by location, time of year, trauma and many other reasons, positive ID is important. Even the most knowledgeable people in the country generally carry a plant book(s) with them when gathering wild edible plants. I always have mine in my truck and reference it often.

It amazes me how we can go on a plant walk with Marty and rather than overwhelming us with every wild edible plant, he sticks to the best ones. The ones with few or no poisonous look-a-likes and the ones that are the best and easiest to gather. The amazing part is that every time we pass something that he doesn't point and someone asks about, he knows all about it. However, he doesn't come across as a know it all. He will periodically say, Tom check out this plant in the Petersons guide and let me know what it says. There is probably some obscure reference about it being dangerous if you eat too much or something like that. The bottom line is that I recommend learning with experts and always carrying a good reference book. It's not about the END OF THE WORLD - It's not about surviving a hypothetical PLANE CRASH - It's about the SATISFACTION YOU GET knowing you can take care of yourself and/or your family in ANY SITUATION, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
