Question: Let's start the day with a plant. This is one that many of us will know, but I'm sure many won't. Do you know it?

Answer: One of my favorites. Milkweed

Milkweed pods are one of my favorite wild edible plants. We ate both the pods and the flower heads. It's one of my favorites for several reasons. First of all it's easy to identify and when it has pods, there are no poisonous look-a-likes. I even remember playing with milkweed pods when I was a kid. Beside all that, the pods are excellent tasting and nutritious. We just boiled them in two changes of water and ate them that way and included them in our stir fry. I have also boiled small milkweed pods once and then fried them in butter and they were great that was also.

In fact you want small milkweed pods. The ones we have in the pic are very close to being too big. Once they get bigger than an inch or so the pods become too fibrous and are not good for eating. Besides being very tasty, they're easy to recognize, gather and prepare. Go ahead and give it a shot. You'll be surprised and how easy they are a how good they taste.
