We just got this pic from one of our friends "Christina Keibler Bolas". Thank you Christina.

"This is a lichen I took a pic of up in maine. It's great because lichen is around all winter and is easy to identify! This particular lichen is a foliose type because it has leafy lobes.

Lichen's have been used by humans for thousands of years! Ancient Egyptians often packed their mummies in lichen, and lichens are a great source of dye.

Lichens are also edible, though one should avoid the yellow lichens as they can be poisinous. Many cultures eat certain lichens as a food staple, but lichen is best left as a last-resort food and should be boiled before eating because of some of the oils that can be present (just avoid the yellow ones). Lichens can be used to pack on wounds as they have been shown to be antibacterial and were used in ancient times to help prevent infection.

I'll dig up a few more, but I thought lichen a fun addition.

Christina "
