Indian cucumber root

My Dirt Time Now this is one of the best tasting wild edible plants that there is. Indian cucumber root is hard to find. In fact after this year at Marty’s school, I now finally have this wild edible plant down. Just recently I was on my buddy Chris’s 30 acres picking up a log splitter he and I bought together and I saw several Indian cucumber root plants. It was very exciting! I know, get a life Tom. It’s one thing to be at a survival school and someone shows it to you, you pluck it and taste it, but it is a massively different thing to be in the woods, you spot it yourself and say, “Hey, I know that plant” and then pluck it yourself and eat it. It was very cool. On my buddies land I actually did pluck it (he wouldn’t care) and took a little bite out of the root (about half the root, they’re very small and not filling at all) and then re-planted it.

On the other hand, we were visiting some friends last weekend in Schenectady NY and their backyard backs up to a large nature preserve. I took a few people for a walk out back and had showed my friend a few plants and had him taste wood sorrel, which is also a very tasty wild edible plant, but really wanted him to taste Indian cucumber root. We hiked around for a while and was seriously focused on plants and looking for it the whole time and never saw it. In fact, the Petersons guide says to only gather when it abundance. It's not about the END OF THE WORLD - It's not about surviving a hypothetical PLANE CRASH - It's about the SATISFACTION YOU GET knowing you can take care of yourself and/or your family in ANY SITUATION, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
