My Dirt Time The Adventures of Tom Sciacca

Winter Survival Camping

This winter camping trip was a lot of fun and there was a great group of people to hang out and hike with. I am going to try to provide as many winter camping equipment list ideas and reviews and winter camping equipment lists as I can.

What we did was all 21 of us met at a local diner at between 8-10 on Saturday morning and after breakfast we went to the trail head. About 40 people said they’d be coming, but only 21 of us really did it. We actually started out on the Appalachian Trail at Hawk Mountain Pennsylvania near Harrisburg.

Here is a little posting online from my friend Kevin Estella before the trip.

“What: The hike in sounds like it is less than 1 mile and the gradient isn't too steep. Shouldn't be a problem getting in but plan on packing light to make the hike easy. The campsite will be off the Appalachian Trail and will not have any modern amenities (who needs them?) Primitive camping will be practiced but feel free to bring whatever modern gizmos you want. Tarp, tent or natural shelters are fine.”

It is very well put. It was a very easy going and fun group of people. Some were new to winter camping and some were old timers that had been winter camping since they were kids. The only requirement to attend seemed to be come prepared for winter camping, to have fun and be able to take a ribbing once in a while.

There was quite a variety of winter camping equipment lists. Some winter campers had full tents and others built natural debris shelters. I just had my 10 x 12 tarp and made an “A frame” shelter. When I camp I love to be able to see the outdoors and the sky at night. In the summer, it’s hard to be out in the open with all the bugs, but while winter camping, I like to be in the open.

This first pic is actually my “survival shelter”.

CampingSurvival.com. It's not about the END OF THE WORLD - It's not about surviving a hypothetical PLANE CRASH - It's about the SATISFACTION YOU GET knowing you can take care of yourself and/or your family in ANY SITUATION, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
