My Dirt Time The Adventures of Tom Sciacca

Survival Skills for Kids

Besides spending time in the woods and practicing my wilderness and urban survival skills, I also have fun passing what I have learned and continue to learn on to others. I entered these pics in late May of 2007 and just this past weekend I took my son and a friend on an edible plant walk with a lady that does this locally and she did a great job. Next weekend, we're going family camping and we're really looking forward to it. So I do get out as often as possible to practice and reinforce my survival skills, but this type of stuff is fun also.

Taking the time off from work and going to my wife's school – she is a special ed teacher – to talk with the kids about survival skills is a great experience. They are special ed kids so it can be hard to keep their attention. However, with something new and exciting like survival and preparedness and a little variety, it was easy to keep them interested.

There were two groups of kids. The older kids were late middle and high school and the younger kids were the younger middle schoolers. With the younger kids I did a short presentation at the beginning and then got them involved. We set up a tube tent, passed around a survival blanket, checked outMRE's (Meals ready to Eat) and played with the EzTowel compressed backpacker and survival towel. They had fun climbing in and out of the tube tent and checking out the survival gear. With the older kids, I did more talking and as always get them involved by asking them questions and answering their questions as I try to convey how survival kills and preparedness could relate to their lives.

They were fun groups and were great kids to work with. Onto the pics.
