Survival Presentation to the KidsThis isn’t exactly “dirt time” but in August of 2006 my wife, a special education teacher in Mexico, NY asked me to come and do a presentation on survival for her and some of the other classes. My wife's class is emotionally disturbed/behaviorally challenged 6-18 year old's, and it’s not an easy job. However with something new and exciting like survival, I was able to keep them entertained for almost an hour. It was a lot of fun for me also. While I do love to get outdoors and practice my survival skills and try my survival gear, it helps me learn better when I get to show people and talk with people about survival. Here is my rough outline of my presentation. Generally, it is a very rough guide and I go by how the kids are. I ask a lot of questions, get them involved and watch them to see how they’re responding and go from there. "Introduce myself Preparedness. Define it. Not just about being in a plane crash or survive in the woods. About having the self confidence to be able to take care of yourself in a difficult situation. In a basic way school preparedness would be get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast and maybe bring your pen, paper and books. The same way it is your responsibility to be prepared for school it is also your responsibility to be able to take care of yourself in a bad situation. Different types of survival situations -Man made or natural disasters. -Hunting, hiking, lost in the woods -Driving to grandma's and the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. What is your most important piece of survival gear? Your brain. Learn survival skills and keep your head Have a kit(s) -Be prepared to take care of yourself and/or your family in any situation. Two types of survival The first one is wilderness and we’ll cover it the most because the needs are very similar to those in a disaster situation such as the hurricanes. Wilderness -Watch your backtrail -When you realize you’re lost, what do you do first? Stop. “Hug a tree” -Shame and embarrassment -Relax-various ways. Sit and think. -Take inventory of your pockets and any gear you have carried with you. -A whistle is always nice to have. It’s easier to blow a whistle over and over again for a period of time than it is to yell. -Wilderness survival kit -Rule of three’s. Air, shelter, food, water. Go through my kit. MRE’s Urban (city) -Bugout bags. Make a bad situation more comfortable and even fun." CampingSurvival.com. It's not about the END OF THE WORLD - It's not about surviving a hypothetical PLANE CRASH - It's about the SATISFACTION YOU GET knowing you can take care of yourself and/or your family in ANY SITUATION, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
