Edible Plant SurvivalThis trip to my friend Marty Simons’ survival skills school from August 21st to August 27th 2006 was a great time. It was so relaxing and educational all in one week. Marty Simon and his new instructor George Hedgepeth put on an excellent course. I have been studying edible plants for several years now. I attend edible plant walks, take walks with my kids, read online about plants, attend survival schools and carry my Peterson Field Guide to edible wild plants with me often. Just the night before I began writing this down, I took my daughter to her horseback riding lesson and spent some time in and around the parking area of the farm and reinforced my plant knowledge. I also have a few other edible and medicinal plant books, but the Petersons is my favorite. This week long survival skills course helped me greatly increase my knowledge and retention of edible plants. For one thing, concentrating on plants for week is a good way to learn. Also Marty and George took us to several different locations and many that required us to drive. That was a help because it broke up the survival school learning and gave us a breather. Also seeing the same plant in several different settings and quizzing us often helped to reinforce it. One of my big ways to learn plants is by tasting and feeling them. We did quite a bit of this. The best thing is that you can easily tell in a short time that both Marty and George don't just study survival skills, they live them. These guys really know their stuff and it’s obvious that they enjoy passing knowledge on to others. The bottom line is that I highly recommend this survival school, not even for those that are into survival skills and preparedness, but for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It was just a great and relaxing way to spend the week with some interesting and fun people. Not being much of a picture taker (I figure that I was there and I did it, I’ll remember it, why take pictures) I made it a point to take remind myself to take pictures. Some of them didn’t come out so well. I hope you enjoy them anyway. CampingSurvival.com. It's not about the END OF THE WORLD - It's not about surviving a hypothetical PLANE CRASH - It's about the SATISFACTION YOU GET knowing you can take care of yourself and/or your family in ANY SITUATION, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
